How to light fine art in an interior
Good lighting does not make an artwork louder. It allows colour, depth and surface to remain clear, without glare, hard-edged pools of light or unnecessary material exposure.
Begin with the artwork, not the fitting
Before choosing a spotlight, establish four things: surface, format, wall position and principal viewing direction. A matte, directly mounted print behaves differently from paper behind glazing. A large work in a lobby requires a different distribution of light from a work in a private seating area.
The useful starting question is therefore not “Which fitting should we use?” but: How should the work read from the relevant distance?
Four criteria for a considered lighting plan
1. Test the angle in the actual room
An angle of around 30 degrees to the wall is a familiar starting point, not a universal specification. Frame depth, surface, ceiling and viewing position alter the result. Test the beam on the final work or a same-size sample before fixing the installation.
2. Prioritise colour rendering
Colour temperature alone does not determine how accurately art is seen. High colour rendering helps reveal subtle transitions and saturated areas. The Canadian Conservation Institute recommends a CRI above 90 for high-quality exhibition lighting, while also advising that fittings and works be tested within their actual display environment.
3. Consider intensity and duration together
Light exposure is cumulative: intensity and duration work together. Brighter is not automatically better. Dimming, lighting scenes and switching display light off when the room is not in use are often more appropriate than continuous high illumination.
4. Control daylight
Direct sun creates strong contrast, heat and long-term material exposure. UV filtration alone does not prevent fading, because visible light also contributes to changes in sensitive materials. Position, shading, duration and the actual sensitivity of the work all matter.
Artwork position → primary sightline → surface → beam → dimming → test on the physical object.
Only then should the fitting and installation point be confirmed.
Assess reflections from real viewing positions
Glare does not occur only on glass. Dark or deeply saturated areas can also reflect directional light. Review the work from arrival, seating, circulation and principal viewing points. Anti-reflective glazing can reduce glare, but it cannot replace sound geometry.
Treat colour temperature as part of the interior
There is no single Kelvin value for every collection. Timber, mineral surfaces, textiles and ambient light create the context. The artwork lighting should sit comfortably within that context while showing the work clearly. Two or three on-site lighting samples provide more confidence than a specification chosen from a data sheet alone.

- Final format and hanging position are confirmed before the lighting point.
- The beam covers the work evenly without a hard edge across the image.
- Colour rendering and dimming performance are documented.
- Reflections are checked from every relevant viewing position.
- Direct sunlight and unnecessary operating hours are avoided.
- A conservator is involved for valuable or particularly sensitive works.
